I'm not so new. I've been an on and off visitor of this site for a few years now. I'm curious because I like the site...

It doesn't seem to me to generate as much serious traffic as it did when it was Mind-Brain.com

I hope Shawn doesn't mind me sharing this information, but BM averages over 50,000 hits per day and I personally feel the site is better than it has ever been due to the daily increase in size and ongoing quality of dialogue. BM is one of the few forum sites I have seen with such breadth of conversation and continues to be an excellent platform for scientific discussions. I hope Shawn gets more involved once again but I know he has been busy with his new position at the Max Planck Institute and the connectome project (see http://www.connectomes.org to follow his progress).

There does seem to be a great deal more on the nootropics issues. But I have to admit to disliking the one-off newcomers who ask a question on what to take to get them better exam result! I think we should have a notice at the top of the section that says, "For exam success, trying chewing books!"

I also think that we old timers are not well integrated into some of the more recent topics on wider issues. So we could feel that not as much is going on. But it does seems as though we have far more members, though maybe many register, ask a question or make a point and then rapidly keep their heads down or maybe never come back again.

It does seem to be a more diverse but perhaps transient stopping place than it used to be. I enjoy reading the wide ranging contributions. It's very quiet here over the weekend and Sundays especially are are boring as York on a foggy day in the Winter! Shawn has been conspicuous by his absence and I'm still waiting for an answer to my request for the iforum (mobile matters) to be created. I also think it would be great if we could embed movies into posts - it might liven things up and would certainly feel more up-to-date.

There seems to be a lack of new material. Just the same old rehashing. Glad to hear the numbers are doing well though. There is a lot of good material in the archives :-)

I agree Hey Hey that integrating movies into posts would be pretty cool. I also tend to agree that appealing to younger audiences is important. Many are devoured in social media but most of the dialogue lacks any real depth. A tighter integration with social media sites would likely help pad BMs stats, but may not necessarily improve the quality of discussion (looks like Flex has already found a way to effectively link social media with BM). We certainly have a core group of contributors here while many visitors may only be looking for specific content and not choosing to contribute. It seems that the vast majority of visitors are coming in and out rather transiently searching for specific types of information in the archives. I do hope too we can establish the iforum for mobile devices. When all is said and done, BM continues to be my favorite forum site and the dialogue taking place is much more significant than I think we often realize. Ultimately, I see BM as a 21st century version of the Platonic dialogues with a distinctly modern Aristotelian spin.

Yeah. It's a good site. You know, I posted a topic that I have never seen talked about on Braim Meta before in the mathematics section, but maybe it has been. To be a little selfish to point out; I think it could fit a certain bill-- Whoever...

It's good to know all is well.

Thanks God

We should really consider getting brainmeta into social networking sites. There are plenty of older people on social networking sites as well to tap into. Not to mention linking up helps google rating. Social networking brings 62% of our (albeit minor) traffic. But we have made $1.62 from advertising the last week smile.gif

Integrating brainmeta with facebook, twitter and dig should help increase traffic, as well as bring new ideas and discussions to the forum. If one of the moderators wants to make a profile on these sites, all moderators can add a linked signature to get people more invested in the community.

I can make a signature for everyone to use in 2 min if you pick an image you all like to represent brainmeta

With all of those hits already that GC mentioned I don't see that FaceBook or Twitter (spit!) integration will add more than passing dross. Facebook pages are very difficult to keep up with as the entries fall off the end of pages never to be seen again and Twitter sentences are most often transient flippant incomplete statements, unless links. I think that such integration will only lead to time-wasting on managing ones information sources rather than reading and commenting in-depth. It is well documented that such social websites lead to only superficial information and discussion styles. Here, on a BM - a forum - we can discuss in depth to our heart's content. Now if you're talking about 'marketing' BrainMeta, that's a different story. But if not being satisfied until every web user on the planet clicks on the site is the goal, I think it is pointless. If people have a reason to search topics on the web, they will come across BM - if it has the topics!

I agree with HH that generating more traffic just for the sake of traffic is fairly pointless. Most people who are interested in the topics on BM will find their way here via Google or other search engines sooner or later.

Funny! But you have a point! There is nothing secret in this forum (well, almost nothing) that is not already available for public viewing; but only those seeking this information may find it. The 'cult' status of the forum reflects this current public interest in the BM content. I kind of like it this way. I also happen to believe in BM's mission and objective. As such, it should become more relevant to the public in general at its due time. But, for now, it's our little secret. So, why try to push it! Have you ever tried feeding broccoli to a kid?
