Just to let everyone know that I changed the server for brainmeta.com and am now using a local server (instead of having the site remotely hosted). The reason for this is because I'd like to do some things with PHP and XML on the site, but because most hosting companies do not have the latest releases of PHP installed on their servers, the PHP functionality (particularly its XML functionality) suffers. To remedy this issue, and because I finally got annoyed with it, I have set up my own server locally for which to run brainmeta.com off of. The transition to the new server has been smooth, though there were a few posts today that were lost (sorry about that). Running Brainmeta.com off my own local server will enable me to add more functionality to the site and not be at the mercy of what others decide to install on the server. This will mean that additional functionality will be evident soon. I'm particularly impressed with some of the things I've done using PHP and XML together, and I'm hoping to soon incorporate these neat new features into Brainmeta.com.

Running my own server locally also means that I am responsible for keeping it running and up as much as possible, so it's a chance for me to find out how easy (or hard) this is.

For those interested, Brainmeta.com is currently running on the same server as http://Primate-Brain.org (as well as several other domains and virtual hosts).

ok, I have now moved BrainMeta to another local server since the first local server was crashing for some reason. That's Windows for you, as unreliable as ever. Hopefully, these server issues are now settled.

Sorry everyone. It appears that one of the forum tables became unreadable last night, which resulted in the forum being inaccessible for several hours. I will have this fixed up asap.

everything appears to work normal now, except that I've had to disable email alerts (since I haven't set up an email server yet) and also, I can't seem to log out! If anyone has any problems with forum functionality, let me know, since it's probably due to the change in server and is something I will look into.

Rhymer here again.
If I surf to brainmeta using my true IP I can get to the site.
If I use an anonymous address (invisible) I can't even get to the site, even though I can get anywhere else I like.

Dear new server, how do you do?
I love to make contact just like you.
Let's be good friends though we are apart
or else I'll call you aunty - social!

There was an issue with the DNS servers which I am fixing now. Apparently, the DNS servers stop working properly last night, which meant that brainmeta.com was unavailable. However, they are working now and I have devised an (inelegant) fix for it that should prevent the DNS servers from acting up again. Thus, bearing unforeseen problems, there should be no more issues with brainmeta (except the log-in issue which I still need to fix).

rhymer here...
Shawn, I have noticed that in the login area the password box contains a row of x's and the name box is empty (the x's disappear when a password is typed in). Is that normal? I'm not sure but suspect both boxes should be empty prior to any data entry.

Shawn here. I am experiencing log-in problems now too, and even though my name is listed above as being logged in, I'm not.

rhymer here...

I know....

Someone's upset the GoogleBot,
It's locked us out for sure.
Common consciousness it is not!
Search me, for I don't know the cure!

Perhaps we all should buy some shares
and seek to see what we may find.
In any case this makes a change
from routine surfing by the blind!

yes, that is another issue that needs to be fixed. I think it has something to do with the $HTTP_POST_VARS in PHP.

Stick in there Rick!
I'd love to join you, but I was never much good at logs!

I'll bet there's steam coming out of Shawns fingers by now.

Have you noticed what you get if you go up and down one letter on PHP?

OGO PHP QIQ.

Take your time Shawn, or you may just cause more problems - there's no real rush anyway becase we can post at will.

Shawn here. I'll have to give the forum fix a shot tomorrow. Maybe you can take another look at http://primate-brain.org , Bill, or Rick. It is the beginning of something that is going to be absolutely awesome in a few weeks. I have a plan to integrate results from most or all existing online neuroscience databases within the framework of the primate brain atlas. And I plan to do it with flash, xml, and php. It's too soon to tell whether i'll need postgres or not. Probably not.

rhymer here...
I've had another look and find the speed acceptable now.

What I can't figure is the two arrows in the controls which point NW and SE.
They do nothing on my computer!
How does one drill up or down through the scans?
Display position and magnification and reset work ok, as does the small black arrow down at the bottom on the LH corner of the original shot.
ATB Bill.
