(I am only 16 years old so please pardon my lack of experience in life)

Obviously the vast majority of humans believe in god, but was this so 10,000-6,000,000 million years ago since our split from the great apes? Is religion a result from natural evolution? I genuinely believe so, over time we became plagued by questions of existence. Why were we created? What is our purpose in life? What lies after death? Eventually, we developed religions and philosophies to answer these questions.

Was the belief in god(s) a radical revolutionary leap forward in evolution and ultimately intelligence? The ability to comprehend a force that is greater than one's self? Otherwise, why do we not see other great apes worship a deity? If that is true, why not let evolution continue on it's natural path of higher and higher cognitive evolution and see what happens instead of having the minority athiests (some not all) try and convince us otherwise? Well, the same could be said, 10,000-6,000,000 million years ago when the first religions just started. When the first minority of religous people tried to convince the primitive unintentional athiests.

Since religion started, athiests have always been around in very small numbers but especially now in modern times with the information age and the new medical renaissance, another rapid cognitive evolution is underway. I am a christian and they're are times on many occasions that I question my faith. I understand the rationale for atheism. Right choice or wrong choice. It's still hard to sleep some nights. Appealing to see life as endless. Refuse to believe life ends here. Too wasteful. Have more to offer. Cannot end here. Could do so much more....

What are your thoughts?

Psychologicaly speaking having a purpose is healthy whatever the purpose is. So those with purposes are in better situation to eventually survive as any strong goal-hope-idea gives some extra mental energy and motivation.

At your age asking such question is more relevant than finding answers. Allow life to teach you and dont push it too much. Listen to all the responses but believe none of them. Being able to live with the unknown the uncertainty is part of not becoming a single minded person.

You are a christian you said. How was that? Just because you were born in certain country at a particularly time you didnīt choose, does that mean your faith and its asumptions should be the good ones? Im afraid it is not the case.
That is one of the very first humble lessons the universe teaches us and questioning your faith is starting to pay attention to that.

By the way the development of religion required several skills which are not fully available on great apes as imagination, persuation and complex comunication.
Minority of athiest trying to convice us? Is it not been quite the opposite? a majority of superstitious people using coercion to convince the rest of us? Its just been lately when atheism started to fight back and not so long ago they were killed or ostracized.

Do you believe this because you were told you descended from an ape? Science is still out to lunch on this idea as absolute. There is still the missing link factor where they can't seem to be able to find the connection but also can't seem to see it any other way.
There are other ideas that say Humanity has been on this planet longer than written history and archeology will reveal. Also the idea that God is a part of us and inherent to the intuitive sense which steers us away from the idea that the universe was a random occurrence or that we just come to be and then live to die into absolute nothingness.

QUOTE(KoolK3n @ Aug 22, 2011, 04:00 AM) *

Why were we created? What is our purpose in life? What lies after death? Eventually, we developed religions and philosophies to answer these questions.

Religion follows the imaginings of those who share their experience of God. With Christianity comes all the beliefs that follow Christ or Jesus the Christed individual. To be Christed meant to be annointed with the stick of knowledge. Jesus spent 18 years as a teen and young adult with what some called priests and monks in the Himilayas and China before he returned to teach his disciples.
Buddhism follows the Teaching of Siddhārtha Gautama, a man who spoke of the Buddhi or spirit within which anoints the body with Knowledge. Another way to describe the spirit which has Christed the body. Every religion is a body of individuals who have been exposed to the Teacher who brings their experience of their relationship to God. What those who imagine that relationship to be follow their imagination and then build churches as a testimony to their imagination and belief.
Rather than discover within themselves what those whom they follow discovered and developed, religion teaches that only men of special birth and dispensation are capable of.
What spiritual science teaches and perpetuates is that Humanity has existed long before this planet was inhabitable and the relationship with God is inherent to man.

Was the belief in god(s) a radical revolutionary leap forward in evolution and ultimately intelligence? The ability to comprehend a force that is greater than one's self?

Yes and no. Humanity has evolved and devolved following a pattern that looks like a sine wave. Up for a while in spiritual knowledge sciences and Unity of purpose, then descending into forgetfulness only to rise again into greatness. Of course that is not the only pattern within what would be called humanity but just one that is relative to part of the history of this universe.

QUOTE(KoolK3n @ Aug 22, 2011, 04:00 AM) *
Otherwise, why do we not see other great apes worship a deity?
Animals have a different relationship to the world around them than humans do. They aren't seeing themselves as separate from the world or the Universe and have no need to pay homage to something to gain favor or greater awareness than that which they experience thru worship. Besides neither Jesus as a Christian or Siddhārtha as a Buddhist, ever taught anyone to worship God in the way the churches and religions today believe they must.

QUOTE(KoolK3n @ Aug 22, 2011, 04:00 AM) *

Isn't fanaticism and stupidity part of evolution?
There is a saying: You have to pull an arrow on the bow far enough backwards in order to create enough power to send it forward. As long as humans believe in evolution they are going to match the extreme of wrong with what is in their heads, in order to determine what is right. That is the nature of imagination, too much thinking, and duality.

It's good that you question religion, and also to question whether your faith should be put into an idea that was put in front of you by an authority that is just accepting a history of changing belief as the only reality.

The brain is very powerful and it is affected by more than the masses accept. I have been experimenting with my own brain for a few years now.

As we learn more about this power I think it will explain why some very intelligent individuals can actually believe in God.

Is it possible that more advanced beings exist? Yes, but the ideas proposed by even the most learned theologians/priests/students of religion are ridiculous.

And no that is not a fallacy. I really don't have time to go into everything, but just consider the advantages to religion.

Not so powerful that it can be affected... Obviously the brain is not in charge if it can be affected.

You've been experimenting why? Because you have been affected by some powerful forces that caused you to do so?

In any particular way that has not already been discussed in this forum? I mean, don't we all?

Masses also do accept and swallow with delight loads of bullshit.

That's hardly and explanation as some very intelligent individuals do not believe in god.

Religion? What advantages?
